About Us
The Social Security Tribunal (SST) is an independent administrative tribunal that makes decisions at arm’s length from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, Service Canada and the Canada Employment Insurance Commission. The SST is mandated to provide a fair and impartial quasi-judicial appeals process under the Employment Insurance Act, the Canada Pension Plan and the Old Age Security Act.
All decisions are made by one decision-maker called a Tribunal Member.
The SST is composed of two Divisions:
- a General Division where a Tribunal Member takes a fresh look at your appeal. At this level of appeal, you can submit additional evidence to support your appeal; however, additional documents must normally be filed on or before a certain date.
- an Appeal Division where a decision can be made only based on information presented at the General Division. New information cannot be submitted at this level of appeal.
The SST can:
- answer questions about how the process works and how it handles your appeal;
- tell you the status of your appeal and if you need to provide any information; and;
- refer you to the SST website for appeal forms and information. If you cannot access a computer, the SST will send you the information by mail.
The SST cannot:
- give you legal advice about your case;
- tell you what words to use in your appeal or submission to a Tribunal member; or;
- recommend the name of someone to represent you.
